This one-day webinar provides a basic overview of the use of FFmpeg for Forensic Video Examinations. Students will gain an understanding of syntax needed to execute basic processes using FFmpeg and how FFmpeg works in the background of processing applications. Hands-on exercises will be used to assist in the understanding of the overall process.

FFmpeg for Forensic Video Examinations is a 1-day online webinar in which students will learn the powerful capabilities that exist using the free command-line tool FFmpeg. You will learn how to play, examine, transcode, and batch process videos - all from a command-line interface. With a basic understanding of FFmpeg, students can learn how to encorporate the process in their workflow or troubleshoot many of the software programs that use this process as their backbone.

Class Outline

In this course students will learn:

  • Basic commands used with FFmpeg
  • How to write a basic script to execute FFmpeg automatically
  • Overall workflow for processing video evidence with FFmpeg

Topics Include:

Day 1

  • “Installation” of FFmpeg on the processing computer
  • Playback of video files
  • Basic examinations of video files
  • Methods for converting video files
  • Creation of scripts to execute FFmpeg processes automatically on video files

Requirements:

Computer Skills
Basic computer skills are required to complete this training.

Computer Equipment

This is a live online webinar using Webex Meetings. In order to view the webinar, attendees will need a Windows 7 or 10 operating system with an active internet connection. Google Chrome is recommended for access. Other internet browsers are supported however additional plugins may be needed for access. Audio is provided through the browser as well as a call-in number.

Participation
Hands-on exercises will be included during each module. Class participation is required in order to achieve successful completion of the class. Prior to the webinar start, a link will be provided for downloading video files and learning materials. It is recommended a separate computer is used to complete the hands-on exercises but not a requirement.

Instructor

Dorothy Stout is owner of Resolution Video Inc. which provides training on Forensic Multimedia Analysis and services for the examination and analysis of video, audio and image evidence. She has been involved in Forensic Video Analysis since 1998 during her career with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and also performed as a Forensic Video Analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense Computer Forensic Laboratory (DCFL). She has worked with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the Security Industry Association (SIA) as a forensic video/digital video technical consultant. Ms. Stout has been qualified as an expert and testified in all levels of the United States Courts and continues to offer expert testimony in civil and criminal cases involving video evidence. She has taught as an Adjunct Professor at the George Washington University, in Washington, DC, the University of Indianapolis, and the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Ms. Stout holds a Masters Degree in Forensic Science and a Bachelor Degree in Psychology.
