Introduction to Audio Forensics

Introduction to Forensic Audio Analysis will introduce the fundamentals of audio, and the processing techniques for forensic audio clarification. This three-day hands-on workshop will cover sound fundamentals, forensic audio “Best practices,” common audio problems, and basic audio enhancement principles. Students will learn how to improve audio recording issues with software tools like Audacity, iZotope RX 4, Sound Forge 11, and Pro Tools. Attendees will also receive information on forensic audio reference resources as well as an overview of other enhancement tools currently available.

Summary

With the proliferation of small digital recorders, cell phones, and video cameras that capture audio data, it is no wonder that audio evidence is an increasingly important part of today's investigations.  Unfortunately there is no shortage of noisy, muffled, unintelligible audio that limits its usefulness.  Do you have the knowledge and expertise to enhance audio evidence and present it in court?

Class Outline

A laptop computer must be brought by each student attending this class. The student must have administrative privileges on the laptop so that they may install software during the class.  It is also recommended that high quality headphones are brought to class for listening to audio on the laptop computer. Instructor

Allen R. Combs has over a decade of pro-audio and multimedia experience, and is highly trained and recognized for his ambitious commitment to the field of media forensics.  Allen began his career in multimedia technology and audio engineering.  He spent years in professional sound and video production before expanding his training into forensic analysis and expert testimony.  Allen has completed numerous forensic audio and video certifications, and hundreds of successful investigations for cases in the United States and abroad.  Allen is an active member of multiple professional organizations including the American Board of Recorded Evidence where he serves on the executive committee.  Allen has consulted as a resource for several media sources including the Discovery Channel, National Geographic, The Boston Herald, Los Angeles Times, American Thinker, and Fox News.
